PARASHAH MAY 23, 2026 NASSO “Take….” Numbers 4:21 – 7:89

by | May 19, 2026

This week’s portion is very significant, and at some points, controversial. The Lord is again
speaking to Moses and giving laws that the Levites must follow. He speaks particularly
regarding the Gershonite, Merarite and Kohathite families and how they are to serve in the
tabernacle. He also speaks about lepers and keeping purity within the camp; about jealousy
and suspected adultery among the women. The Lord is strong in His expectations when He
speaks of the law of the Nazarite, one who makes a voluntary commitment to holiness. This
is a very sacred status, even greater than that of a priest and it treated as such. A special
“priestly blessing” is given by the Lord which is to be spoken over His people, and finally, the
laws of tabernacle offerings by the leaders of each tribe are also given to Moses.
Although all of these rules and regulations may seem difficult for one reading the Book of
Numbers, it gives a deeper understanding of the spiritual and social character of Israel at the
time. This portion should urge us remind ourselves of OUR core values and mission….to keep
things in perspective and balanced. When we know our personal values and principles, then
we can let these values and principles guide us as we confront others. Throughout history,
the Jewish people, as well as other nations of the world, have suffered with things such as
famine, drought, and natural disasters. Some of these incidents were brought about by poor
management of the environment by the people themselves. But God….. He ALWAYS
provides! If only we would look with spiritual eyes! If only we could see the positive! The
rules, the regulations, the consequences all seem harsh and unfair to the human
mind, however, if we can remember Joseph, who saw the famine ahead and prepared for it,
it might make a difference in our lives. It is our responsibility to learn from our mistakes as
well as from the mistakes of others, and not to repeat them. God says……”and WHEN you
shall….”
Not…..”IF you shall…..”.
No, it’s NOT the rules, rules and more rules…..it’s how you SEE and RECEIVE the Rules!
