Study of What the Scriptures say about the People and Land of Israel: God confirms His covenant with Isaac and Jacob (who He names Israel).

by | May 18, 2026

One of the greatest studies that Christians can do is to prayerfully read and study what God has said and promised to the people and land of Israel. We are posting here scriptural passages which show what the Lord has said about the land of Israel, or a covenant or promise God has made with the Jewish people. Please use these scriptures as the beginning point of study using various tools such as commentaries quoting well recognized Hebrew scholars, or the Logos Lexicon of Hebrew words. Our prayer is that these scriptures will come alive in your hearts as the Holy Spirit speaks to you about God’s intentions, heart, and promises to the Jewish people and over the land of Israel.

Gen. 26:2-5: God’s Covenant with Isaac

And the Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; stay in the land of which I shall tell you. Live for a time in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to your father Abraham. I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because Abraham obeyed Me and fulfilled his duty to Me, and kept My commandments, My statutes, and My laws.”

  • God told Isaac to stay in the land despite the famine that was occurring
  • God promised He would be with Isaac and bless him
  • God’s presence is central
  • Isaac trusted God and obeyed instead of resorting to human solutions
  • God confirmed His covenant with Isaac and told him that He would multiply his descendants, give him all these lands, and through his descendants all nations would be blessed

Gen. 28:12-15: God’s Covenant with Jacob

And he had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. Then behold, the Lord was standing above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your [b]descendants. Your descendants will also be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and to the east, and to the north and to the south; and in you and in your descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

  • God confirms that the covenant that he made with Abraham and Isaac, He would make specifically to Jacob and his descendants
  • God told him He would give to him and his descendants all the land and through them all the nations of the world will be blessed
  • God promised to Jacob He would be with him and Jacob committed to God he would tithe

Gen 35:9-12: Jacob becomes Israel

Then God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-aram, and He blessed him. God said to him,

“Your name is Jacob;
You shall no longer be called Jacob,
But Israel shall be your name.”

So He called him Israel. God also said to him,

“I am God Almighty;
Be fruitful and multiply;
A nation and a multitude of nations shall come from you,
And kings shall come from you.
And the land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac,
I will give to you,
And I will give the land to your descendants after you.”

  • God appeared to Jacob and confirmed that Jacob’s name would be Israel
  • He will multiply his descendants and specified that the land which He gave to Abraham and Isaac, He would give to Israel and his descendants
  • God is always faithful to fulfill His word
  • These are covenants and promises that every Christian should know and understand the significance of how God is fulfilling His promise to the descendants of Israel today
